The Prespawn Crawfish Connection
As water temperatures rise from the mid-40s into the 50s, crawfish become increasingly active on rocky substrates. Bass that have spent the winter in deep, slow metabolisms begin moving toward spawning flats — and they eat crawfish heavily along the way.
The reason is thermodynamics. Rocky banks, rip-rap, and chunk rock absorb solar energy and warm faster than muddy or sandy bottoms. Crawfish follow the warmth. Bass follow the crawfish.
Where to Find Prespawn Bass on Craw
Primary locations:
- Chunk rock banks leading from winter staging areas toward spawning flats
- Rip-rap (dam faces, causeways, bridge riprap) — these warm quickly and hold crawfish all spring
- Pea-gravel or small rock transitions between the main lake and spawning coves
- Rocky points with access to deep water
The best banks have a mix of rock sizes. The interstices between rocks are where crawfish hide, and bass know every gap.

The Retrieve
On chunk rock banks, the most effective retrieve is a slow drag-and-pause. Cast parallel to the bank, maintain bottom contact, and hop the bait over rocks. Let it fall naturally between rocks — that's when most strikes occur.
On rip-rap, a steady retrieve with occasional deflections off rocks is often better. The erratic action as the lure caroms off rocks mimics a crawfish trying to escape.
