More Shad Patterns by Technique
Six more lure styles that match shad in different conditions — from spawn-time topwater to dead-of-winter jerkbaits.
Strike King Premier Plus Spinnerbait — White / Chartreuse Shad
Slow-roll deep or burn shallow over grass. White-and-chartreuse skirt mimics a fleeing shad.
Z-Man ChatterBait Mini Max — Shad Pattern
Steady retrieve through stained water and shallow cover. The blade pulse calls bass keyed on shad commotion.
Heddon Zara Spook — Bone / Shad Color
Walk-the-dog over shad schools at dawn and dusk in fall. Cast past the school, walk back through it.
Strike King Mr. Crappie Slabalicious on 1/8 oz Jig Head
Vertical jigging or slow swimming for cold-water bass holding tight to deep structure with shad above.
Smithwick Suspending Rattlin' Rogue — Clown / Shad
Twitch-twitch-pause for cold-water suspended bass. The pause kills more fish than the action does.
Berkley PowerBait Pre-Rigged Swim Shad — 3 in
Steady slow retrieve along channel edges and bluff walls. Looks dead-on-the-money like a wounded threadfin.
Nov 16 – Feb 28
Shad gravitate to warmer, deeper water. Bass are always found around shad schools — follow the bait to find the fish. Effective baits: jig head minnows, jerkbaits, and small swimbaits worked slow and deep.
Mar 1 – Apr 14
All shad rise in the water column. Match shad suspending mid-column with jerkbaits, suspending crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs.
Apr 15 – Apr 30
Bass are largely uninterested in shad during spawn. Switch to bluegill or crawdad patterns for spawning bass.
May 1 – May 14
Shad Spawn. Shad move shallow at night and before sunrise to bank rocks — bass commit aggressively. Throw moving baits: spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, squarebill crankbaits, and topwater at first light.
May 15 – Jun 15
Threadfin shad suspend in the upper column; gizzard shad settle deeper. Work crankbaits top to bottom; spinnerbaits and bladed jigs still produce around shallow cover.
Jun 16 – Aug 31
Shad suspend above the thermocline. Deep-diving crankbaits, jig head minnows, and small swimbaits worked just above the temp break are most effective.
Sep 1 – Nov 15
Shad move from deep to shallow banks as days shorten and temps drop. Topwater lures, lipless cranks, and squarebills shine as bass feed up for winter.
Nov 15 – Dec 31
Shad pull back to warmer deep pockets. Bass stack on them — fish slow and deep with jerkbaits, jig head minnows, and small swimbaits near structure.
