The Angler's Guide to Bluegill Cranking: DT Series Deep Dives

Rapala DT series crankbaits in bluegill colors are among the most overlooked tournament tools. Here's when to throw them and how to fish them right.

Why Bluegill-Pattern Crankbaits Get Ignored

Walk through any tackle shop and you'll see the shad side of the crankbait aisle cleaned out. The bluegill-pattern cranks? Usually still stocked. That's a missed opportunity.

Bass eat bluegill year-round. During the spawn and post-spawn period, they eat more bluegill than anything else. The problem isn't the lure — it's that most anglers don't know when or how to fish bluegill-pattern cranks effectively.

The Rapala DT Series: A Depth-Band System

The Rapala DT (Dives-To) series is engineered to reach specific depth bands on standard fluorocarbon with a medium-action rod. Here's how the lineup maps:

| Model | Target Depth | |-------|-------------| | DT4 | 0–4 feet | | DT6 | 4–6 feet | | DT8 | 6–8 feet | | DT16 | 12–16 feet |

Use this like a drill bit — start shallow with the DT4 and work deeper until you find the depth where bass are holding.

When to Throw Bluegill Cranks

Post-Spawn (May–June): The single best time. Bluegill are spawning in the shallows and bass are aggressively feeding on them. The DT4 and DT6 in bluegill patterns along the shoreline are deadly.

Summer: Bass that hold near dock shade and weed edges are keyed on bluegill. The DT8 along the outside weed edge at 6–8 feet is extremely productive in natural lakes.

Fall: Bluegill remain a secondary pattern even as shad take over. Anywhere you see bluegill activity near structure, a bluegill crank will produce.

The Right Setup

  • Rod: 7' medium-heavy moderate action
  • Line: 12–15 lb fluorocarbon
  • Retrieve: Medium-speed with occasional deflections off structure

Fluorocarbon sinks and helps get the lure to its rated depth faster. Avoid braid for crankbaits — you'll lose the shock absorption that prevents fish from throwing hooks.

Pair With a Swimbait for the Full System

When bluegill cranks produce bites but fish are short-striking, follow up with the Berkley PowerBait Swim Shad HD Bluegill on a light head. The softer presentation often catches the fish that rejected the hard bait.
